Audience effects theory

  Audience effects theory 1) Write a definition of a  passive  audience: This is the view that audiences  passively  take in information from the media and that these messages have the same effect on everyone. 2)  Write a definition of an active audience:   This is the more modern and generally accepted view that audiences interact with and make conscious choices regarding the media they consume. 3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:   A linear communication hypothesis called the Hypodermic needle theory contends that media messages are directly injected into the minds of obliging viewers. 4) Write down a  media product  (e.g. TV show, newspaper or video game)   for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and  WHY  it fits that particular audience use/gratification. Reception Theory

  Reception theory 1) What is the preferred reading of a media text? The message that the creators hope to convey. This expands on the notion that producers can use accepted standards and conventions (like stereotypes) to position the audience in a particular way and sway their reading so they embrace the desired message. 2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text? The alternative interpretation contradicts the intended message that the creators aim to convey. Instead of accepting the intended meaning, the listener creates a different interpretation.
